Our first holiday as a family

Cooey! How is everyone? It’s been a while, hasn’t it? You know all that stuff people say about babies being time consuming, well it’s all true. Mimi is twelve weeks old now and it’s been the fastest twelve weeks of my life and yet we have done very, very little asides from feed, sleep, change nappies, play, go to an occasional music session or swim lesson and repeat; life has become unrecognisable to what it was before.

We had a rough start with lots of feeding issues but we’ve got those sorted out now and Mimi has become such a dreamy baby, always smiling and wanting to play and she sleeps – I still can’t believe our luck to have a baby who sleeps through the night at such a young age and I am keeping everything crossed that this sleep spell does not get broken any time soon. The reason I’m telling you all this? Well, a couple of weeks ago we felt ready to slowly emerge from the baby bubble and get back into the real world by taking our first trip away together to celebrate my first Mother’s day.

I suppose I was a bit nervous that going away with a baby would be no fun or more like hard work than anything else but I had nothing to worry about. We were invited to stay at one of the many beautiful homes managed by Unique Home Stays and after much deliberation (so, so difficult to choose as they are all stunning – I really want to go here and here too!) I chose the magical wooden cabin, Firefly, located in a small hamlet in Cornwall for our first trip away as a three (well, four including Otto). I mean, just look at it…

The cabin began life as stables set in a wild flower meadow on the owner’s farm. They set to work to completely transform it in to an authentic woodcutter’s cabin. Clad with 750 old scaffolding boards and reclaimed materials the cabin looks and feels amazing – as soon as we stepped foot inside it felt like the building was giving us a great big hug, helped by the hamper of goodies, cream tea, fully stocked store cupboard and the ready laid open fire.

The design of the cabin is very clever as it feels so warm and cosy for the colder months (I hate feeling cold at home so I was very pleased that it was toasty warm throughout our stay) yet it is perfect for the warmer months too with the massive barn style doors that open up from the main living area onto the porch with two different seating areas and a BBQ.

The house is filled with interesting vintage finds that give the space real character and make it feel like a real home, not just a soulless holiday house. The kitchen was very well equipped and because we had the baby we stayed at home in the evenings and cooked up some yummy dinners.

Mimi must have appreciated how comfortable and welcoming the bedroom was as she did her first night of twelve hours of sleep here – the best present I could have asked for on Mother’s Day! It also gave us the chance to sleep properly in the wondrous bed covered in beautiful linens – delish. There were even linen dressing gowns.

The bathroom in the cabin was one of my favourite bits of the design. With a concrete sink and bath and the shower clad in corrugated iron I initially thought it would be cold and hard but the skylight flooded the room with light and the heating and weathered wood kept it wonderfully warm. Such a cool design.

Otto loved our ‘cabin in the woods’ just as much as we did and he even got his own bed, bowls and treats to welcome him. If you are not doggy people though you would never in a million years know that any dogs had ever been there – the place was spotless.

Cornwall is always a wonderful place to visit and we were super lucky as we got the sun but the beaches were almost completely empty as it was low season – perfect! We arrived on Friday and headed to Crantock beach so that we could all stretch our legs after the long car journey and then to the local farm shop for supplies.

On Saturday we went to Padstow for fish and chips at Rick Stein’s restaurant as well as a trip to Port Isaac, which is so beautiful (emergency sun hat purchased for Mimi whilst we were there).

We also stopped by Porthcothan beach, which is where my mum spent all her childhood holidays with her father and brother. It’s all so lovely and unspoilt and I bet it hasn’t changed much since the days she visited there.

It was such a special time with our little girl visiting the sea for the first time and being able to watch her soak up new sensations. Just the most perfect way to spend my first Mother’s Day.

On our way home on Monday we stopped at Watergate Bay for brunch and a dog walk along the beach and it is absolutely stunning; the type of place that makes you gasp when you see it for the first time. Sand stretching out forever and the blue skies were unbelievable. We really didn’t want to leave.

Thank you so much to Unique Home Stays for our stay at the incredible Firefly cabin; we loved our time there and made such precious memories of our first trip away together. I want to relive it again and again (and I simply must have my own cabin one day, natch!).

A fresh new year interior

Happy new year, all! I hope everyone celebrated well and has had a couple of days to recover from all the festivities.

As soon as Christmas is done I have an uncontrollable urge to completely strip out all of the decorations, get them all packed away, give the house a good clean and look at the space with brand new, fresh eyes. I want everything to be clean, bright and ready for a new year and new beginnings. I am the kind of person who can’t think straight unless my surroundings are in order and this controls me big time at this point of the year!

So, whilst I am ‘new year cleaning and sprucing’ here is a little inspiration of what I would love to achieve – a wonderful blank canvas on which to build during the coming year…

This Swedish apartment with all its light and airiness looks like heaven to me. No clutter, simple colour palette with hints of grey and tiny dots of pink and space to move and breathe. Deeeelightful. If you need me, I’ll be trying to achieve this in my home over the next couple of days. Anyone else trying to do the same?

Happy 2017!

Livingetc house tours 2016

Last year I was invited by the ao.com team to tour some of the amazing houses in north west London that have been featured in LivingEtc magazine. It was such a great day and full of unique interiors so I didn’t hesitate when I was invited again this year to see some of the homes in south west London.

If I am completely honest I preferred the style of the houses on last year’s tour but there are always ideas and sparks of inspiration that fly in any home I visit so nosing around was so much fun. Here is a taster of a few of the houses…

Plough Mews

Hidden away behind mews doors you would never expect to walk into this former stables, which was far and away my favourite home of the day. This magical conversion has created a two-storey L-shaped house that wraps around the most beautiful garden and it is like stepping into the mediterranean. Every room opens out onto the garden, which makes the outdoors an integral part of this home, owned by a fabric and accessories designer, who originally lived in just one part of the mews but over time took over the whole thing. I’m afraid we couldn’t take photographs inside as this home is due to be in the next edition of Livingetc (I can’t wait to see that spread) but here are a few pics from the garden:

Heathfield Road

Bold, colourful and eclectic sums up this terraced house owned by an interior designer. Filled with vintage finds and huge doses of colour and pattern there was so much to look at in this home and, although not my style, the house did have loads of personality.

Burntwood Close

A suburban thirties house, owned by an art dealer, this family home has been fully modernised. The interior is fairly minimal with injections of colour against the white backdrop and glass extension. Lots of green and plants help to blur the boundaries between inside and outside and the artwork creates points of interest throughout the house.

A unique Georgian home in Hampstead

As you all know, I love snooping round other people’s homes and when I come across a house that is as full of beautiful details and unique finds as Celia’s I could spend hours listening to the story of every object, walking from room to room in awe and roaming the wonderful garden. I caught up with Celia, who set up childrenswear label La Coqueta three years ago, to tell me more about her Georgian home nestled in the green folds of Hampstead Heath and her inspiration behind both her interior style and the traditional Spanish style clothes that she sells both online and from her first shop, also located in Hampstead.

AW15 Home_144

“I am originally from Spain and moved to London when I finished my studies back in 2001. I have been living in London since with my husband and five little children – Flavia (8), Lucas (6), Siena (5), Bosco (4), Hugo (3).

My background is in Psychology but I have always had a passion for childrenswear. When I had my first child, Flavia, people would stop me in the street to ask where they could buy the clothes my daughter was wearing. These were nearly always the items I had purchased from my hometown in Southern Spain (very similar to the styles I use to wear as a little girl). This reinforced a gut feeling I had that there was a gap in the UK market for beautiful, well-made Spanish children’s clothes. I felt the key to success was to design pieces with a luxury feel, with an affordable price tag. I decided to create my own collection, working closely with family-run Spanish manufacturers and tried all the samples on my own children to ensure they were pieces my customers and I would love and also so that I could give first hand advice regarding size, fit and garment care. I opened my first shop in 2013 and La Coqueta was born. Now I balance my time between being a busy mum and being a business owner and designer.”

Where do you live and with whom?

“I live in Hampstead (North London) with my husband and five children, next to the biggest park in town, Hampstead Heath, which we visit every weekend. It’s a little bit like living in the countryside but in the heart of the city.”

Tell me about your home and what made you choose to live there.

“My home is an old Georgian farm that dates from the XVIII. It’s located next to Hampstead Heath and feels a little bit like a doll house, there is not a single corner that looks the same. For some people, not having straight walls or different size doors may be unpractical, we think it’s full of charm. We have a total of 6 bedrooms (two of them are tiny!), a living room, a dining room and a kitchen. It has a garden and at the back of it, a vegetable garden which we use regularly to grow our own produce and cook it. It’s the best nanny when the summer arrives!

For my husband and I our top priority has always been to have a big family and with that, having a home which we love has always been part of our dream. Every move we’ve done since we met has always been geared towards having the nicest house we could afford and make it a home where we could grow our family together. We found out this house was for sale through friends of ours and we chased it for over a year until the owner decided to sell to us. We love the fact that this house has a lot of history and is located in a very quiet part of the neighbourhood, next to the Heath, so that we can visit it every time we fancy going for a walk. Our home is our little paradise, a great escape from any daily stress coming from work.”

What improvements have you made to your home?

“At the moment we haven’t done much. When we moved in, the house was very run down, it had lots of leaks, carpet everywhere and was just not very well taken care of. We decided to give it a face lift by painting it all white (in the bedrooms) and make it a lot more personal on the ground floor. It’s amazing what a lick of paint can do and in a matter of weeks, the house looked completely different. We are planning to do building works in a couple of years, once we get to know each other well and then find out what we want to do.”

AW15 Home_089

AW15 Home_246

AW15 Home_249

Where do you find inspiration?

“I am inspired by XVIII century French antiques, the Vertgaland spirit and anything that surrounds Marie Antoinette, the wife of Louis XVI of France. In another life I would have chosen that time, without the guillotine! I’m inspired by French and gustavian XVIII century interiors… and I like to combine these with more contemporary pieces. I love displaying objects that I have collected during my life during a trip or that represent an important time in my life… This could be a shell picked up at the bottom of the ocean, a beautifully carved marble box bought in Rajasthan, Eucalyptus picked up from a special place… I love being surrounded by things that have lots of sentimental value to me and my family.”

AW15 Home_155

Does your interior style feed into your work in any way?

“This is a very interesting question… It’s not conscious but I think my interiors and my clothes hold hands… I have a very classic style when it comes to decorating my home but I like mixing it with more contemporary pieces. My clothes I guess are the same, classic with a modern twist through the use of colourful accessories and contemporary styling. My clothes look great in my interiors, possibly because I originally make clothes for my own children and I always imagine them in my home as this is where we spend most of our time.”

Favourite shops or places to buy furniture/homewares?

“I like to collect pieces that tell a story, I often pick up decorative objects on my travels and love vintage finds. I head to Phoenix on Golborne Road for interesting vintage furniture and one-off pieces. I head to Church street for beautiful rugs or lovely Scandinavian finds. For more contemporary pieces, in particular, for the children’s bedding I shop at Camomile London and Molly Meg for furniture. I also love to fill the house with succulents and flowers from Clifton Nurseries. When I go to Paris, I always visit Arnaud Catel who has the most wonderful pieces (real XVIII century, no copies).”

Describe your perfect day spent at home.

“My perfect day is always spent with my husband and my children, alone in our home without having anything in particular to do. We love our little weekend routine… breakfast all together (my husband does the cooking), all going to the Saturday market together and picking our favourite food, cooking a delicious meal together, spending time together in the afternoon and then going for a walk on the Heath. Generally it’s all around our home, garden, food and wine. It is fairly basic but that’s really what makes us happy and fulfilled.”

Babington house

Hope you are all having a wonderful long weekend. I’m just dropping in briefly to share a few snaps I took at Babington House after we spent a long break there last weekend. It was my first visit but I’ve already decided that I want to get married there (we still haven’t set a date after getting engaged about three years ago so we could be talking ten year’s time at this rate) mainly based on the fact that you get the run of the house and all your guests stay with you – cool, no?

Whenever I go away the accommodation is always top of my priority list and Babington did not disappoint. We stayed in the stable block, which had a living room with a mezzanine bedroom and the most beautiful bathroom (I LOVE a good bathroom because mine at home is so boring).  The grounds were glorious as Spring blooms were blossoming and the Cowshed Spa was the icing on the cake (we spent every morning in there and in the gorgeous heated outdoor pool). Too good and I wish you all had a sister as generous as mine to take you there.

Next time we want to stay in the cabin that you can see above. And then the time after that I’m thinking a walled garden room. And then… ok, maybe time to stop fantasising. But I do mean it about getting married there. Take a peek at a wedding at Babington House that Katharine Peachey shot – dreamy.

Anyhoo, back to the hot cross buns…
