Bedroom makeover

Another season, another room makeover! This time I wanted to tackle my bedroom but it’s not so much a makeover, as more of a spruce up and de-clutter. To me, my bedroom was feeling heavy, dark and full of stuff and it was the last room in our flat that I would want to spend time in so it was time to rip up the carpet and get out my trusty Farrow and Ball floor paint. Here is what it looked like a couple of months ago…

Before

This was the only room in the flat that still had carpet, so that was the main job. Other than that, I didn’t really want to change the furniture, but try to lift the space and make it feel fresher and more cohesive.

I hated the carpet and how much light it absorbed.

This area felt cluttered and messy.

After

And here are the changes I made:

1. Painted the MDF boards under the carpet with Farrow and Ball All White floor paint (find out how I did it here). I also used Farrow and Ball’s wood floor primer and undercoat, which makes all the big difference to the quality of the finish and how long it will last.

2. Gorgeous new Lazy Linen bundle and a dusty pink linen Scrunch cushion from Loaf.

3. Hung a beautiful brass Bloomingville hanging flower pot holder from Out There Interiors, inspired by Urban Jungle Bloggers.

4. New bedside lamp from Occa-Home.

5. Painted the wardrobes white.

6. De-cluttered the top of the wardrobes as they had become a storage dumping ground and moved more plants up there.

7. New jute rug from Heal’s.

8. Completely cleared my dressing table and all the pictures around it, which feels soooo much better.

9. Sheep skin rug and House Doctor vase from Holly’s House.

10. House Doctor jug vase and Bloomingville pink vase from Royal Design.

A new bedside lamp from Occa-Home lifts my antique bedside table and the colour works perfectly with the other greys and pinks. The basket is from Tea and Kate and the House of Rym throw is from The Future Kept.

Once you’ve had linen sheets you will NEVER go back! This Lazy Linen from Loaf is so wonderful to sleep in and updates my Coco bed. The pink Scruch cushion also ties in with other pinks dotted round the room.

Love this new Rose-Grey Earth vase from Holly’s House.

The top of my wardrobes that I bought for £40 from eBay when I first moved into the flat had become a dumping ground for storing extra bedlinen, duvets, winter clothes etc. I had a really good clear out and sold lots of stuff so I could move more plants up there.

I am in love with this brass planter from Out There Interiors and it works perfectly in this room, especially with the wardrobe plants. I repainted the wardrobes white (they were a pale mint) as new build flats have no such things as alcoves so wardrobes stick out like a sore thumb. Painting them the same as the wall colour helps to make them look less imposing.

I have a large succulent, a wonderful smelling Jasmine and Aloe Vera plants on the wardrobe. The greens really help to break up all of the white in the room.

I love this old mirror that used to hang in a restaurant my parents owned and the contrast with the white works really well.

I decided to clear the dressing table and put all of my lotions and potions into the two top drawers. I added vases for flowers so I won’t be tempted to mess it all up again.

In love with this pink Lilac.

I have been inspired by Urban Jungle Bloggers to have more and more plants throughout my home and it really does make such a difference.

I stayed at the Shoreditch Hotel recently and I couldn’t find the hair dryer. Eventually I found it in a market basket hanging on the wall. I’ve stolen that idea here and that’s where I now keep my hairdryer, brush and straighteners. This is also a good way to hide all of the ugly cables.

The white floor makes all the difference in this room as the light from the floor to ceiling window can travel around the room, rather than being absorbed by the heavy carpet. However, we did want a rug to tie the room together and this round Linie rug from Heal’s is perfect.

I kept my grandmother’s chair in this room but moved it away from the window as it was blocking too much light.

Jules insisted on having a sheep skin rug on his side of the bed so he didn’t step out of bed onto hard floor and this one is from the wonderful Holly’s House. Although, Otto kind of thinks it’s his now.

I know it’s not a radical makeover in the same way as my office or hallway, but this room now feels so much better, which is the most important thing. I know it may look very bare to some, but I love the simplicity of having so few things in this room, especially as it is where we sleep. Over time, I will add more artwork and I’m sure other bits and bobs will creep back in and there are still a few things I need like a lamp shade for the main overhead light. For now, I’m really enjoying how bright and uplifting it feels, especially with all this sun that has been streaming in and bouncing around the new white floor (my favourite thing about the room!). I hope you like it.

Once again….love love LOVE all your makeovers and it really kills me with envy 😉 there’s so much I want to do with our flat and seeing this I
makes me desperately want to start on it. We have a kitchen makeover coming up in June so in sure once I get into that it’ll get things moving. We have carpet through out the flat too and didn’t realise how much it drains the light despite being a neutral bright colour. After seeing your hallway, in mad to strip it all and paint it…..just need to convince the husband about hibernating for 6days!!! 🙂

So pleased to see the transformation, it looks so restful! I whole heartedly agree about the linen, I’ve just treated myself to some from West Elm whilst visiting the store last week. You can always rely on F&B my spare bedroom floorboards look super now the carpet has gone, still need to get rid of more things not quite as disciplined as you Katy. Jane xx

What an incredible transformation – the one thing I hate about living in a rental place is not being able to put floorboards down. Such a beautiful light space – and I never thought of putting plants on top of the wardrobe. So inspiring!

    Hi Katy,

I’m after some curtains and yours look lovely! Where are they from?

    Lauren

    • Katy 20th July 2015 / 12:54 pm

Hi Lauren. My curtains are made to measure from John Lewis (you go into store and choose the fabric and style). However, they were stupidly expensive at about £700 with the rail so be warned!! x

I love your room, really nice. I love the light and airy space you have made. I’m a big fan of white/light airy spaces, lovely. Thanks for sharing, It’s very stylish and tasteful.

May I ask how the farrow and ball floor paint compared in durability/look and sheen compared to the International Floor Paint you used on other floors. Which is more matt and the better floor paint in your opinion?

  11. Anna 18th November 2015 / 8:42 pm

Wow! Such a beautiful light white space! You are so creative…

I love the black and white contrast you have going on with the mirror.

I also have a basket bag like yours in our bedroom to keep the ugly wires hidden!!
